Vehicle Classification

There are various ways of setting up vehicle classification systems with fiber optic axle sensors. Telling trucks from passenger cars can be done by simply referring to the load dependent sensor signals. More sophisticated systems are obtained by determining wheel base, number of axles etc using gap and headway measurement and axle counting together. Axle sensors laid out with a certain inclination respective to the travel path allow for acquisition of wheel track information and recognition of dual wheels. Due to their static output signals fiber optic load sensors from SENSOR LINE are specially suited for this purpose. Using an additional inductive loop not only enhances performance but also provides vehicle length and magnetic signature information useful for classification. SENSOR LINE uses such a sensor arrangement together with a MD-440 interface (two specially modified MD-220 interfaces) in their classification system CLASSAX.
