Road Traffic Axle Detection and Counting
|
is the simplest way to utilize fiber optic axle sensors. It is done by using a single sensor subsystem which can directly be connected to e.g. a switch or a counting device. Simple axle detection is e.g. often sufficient for vehicle-actuation of traffic signals. Counting axles is a more adequate way to estimate the wear of the pavement than counting vehicles. Moreover, for this purpose can be made use of the load-dependent signals that fiber optic load sensors deliver. Vehicle counting can be done by counting axles and dividing their number by some statistical mean value of axles per vehicle. This is no joke: Doing so with a continuously available axle counting system may yield traffic data much more accurate than can be expected from a vehicle counting system that has periods of inactivity.
