Axle Sensor Installation Procedure
|
The SPZ/SPT-series sensors are designed for permanent installation into the road. After cutting a slot into the pavement, the sensor is embedded in the slot using special polyurethane compounds available from SENSOR LINE. Provided that traffic is moving it can be released one hour after embedding the sensor: Only if vehicle tires might rest on the freshly sealed slot, longer curing times (2 to 3 h) are recommended.

SPZ Traffic Sensor with fiber optic feeder cable

Cutting of the slots

Cleaning of the slots with high-pressure air

Grinding the slots' edges

Taping the slots

Preparing the two-component embedding material
Laying of the first sensor element (workers are wearing protective
gloves, because first layer of embedding material is already in the slot)

Finishing embedding of the first sensor (note worker in the
background simultaneously preparing freshly mixed material)

Installing the roadside ducts

Finishing the roadside connection using harder embedding material

The roadside connection box

After one hour the measurement site is ready

Axle Sensor Embedding Materials
|
Sensor LINE offers tested materials based on polyurethane to ensure excellent adhesion, durability, chemical resistance and constant properties over temperature. Detailed embedding instructions support fast and simple flush installation of the fiber optic load sensors in all kinds of pavement.

Solvent-free, two-component self-levelling casting materials based on special polyurethane resins. These materials ares well-suited for use with all kinds of asphalt and concrete. They stick to the pavement without any primer being necessary. None of their components is dangerous cargo.
The two materials differ only in hardness.
The two components are shipped in one larger and one smaller tin can. To apply, Component 1 in the larger can is first stirred to be homogenized, then Component 2 is added from the smaller can and the mixture is stirred again. Pot life is about 10 minutes at room temperature and can be adjusted to obtain special versions optimized for different temperatures. The material of the cans is chosen to allow for easy deformation so it can be shaped by hand to facilitate exact pouring.
